I have had this list here, waiting to get posted. I was writing an intro explaining the importance of this list and why we should be more aware of using these phrases with our kids. And then, in the same week – we had both the elections and my son was bullied and pushed at school- he ended up with a mild concussion.
Now, I do not want to get into the logistics of each or pointing fingers because – what is done is done (and I already went all momma bear crazy at the school, lol). But I think we can agree that 1. the elections have sadly caused a huge divide and just a lot of “meanies and ugly comments” that are tearing apart families and friends – and 2. we need to teach our kids to be kinder and not bullies (we can’t do that while we bully others online btw). Also, I can’t help but think that maybe… just maybe… the kid who hurt my son – needed to hear some encouraging words a little more.
And even though these 2 events had nothing to do with each other (my son wasn’t bullied because of politics) it still ties in together pretty well. Because, I am seeing a HUGE amount of adults being bullies and ya know what? Their kids are seeing it too and think it is okay! YOUR KIDS ARE WATCHING AND IMITATING YOU. We need to become more aware of what we say around them and how we treat others especially when they are around. And most importantly, we need to make sure we are letting our kids know DAILY that they matter. That they are loved. That they are amazing. Because THAT, will also make them BETTER PEOPLE! And, that’s all we ever really want for our kids, right? To succeed and be a GOOD person!
These two events have proven to me even MORE how important this list is AND how important it is for us to make sure we are teaching kindness. But, in order to do that – we have to do it as well (ourselves). So – I am starting a #KINDNESSCHALLENGE and I would love for you to join in – USE THE HASHTAG and share!
And, by the way- NONE OF US are perfect. We all say or do things that we probably shouldn’t – I get it. I am just saying, let’s try to be MORE AWARE and instead- spread kindness.

Our kids self esteem, their internal self-perception and the manner in which they treat others – comes from US, the parents. What we say and do. How we treat others. How we speak and react -especially, in regard to them. It starts in the HOME.51 Encouraging Things Your Child NEEDS To Hear! + A #KINDNESSCHALLENGE Click To Tweet
Go through this list, and just ask yourself – are you telling your kids (at least a few of) these things daily? If you realized that are not, don’t worry – you can START NOW. If you are doing and saying these things – GREAT! We are off to a great start – so now, let’s anty it up a bit and challenge ourselves and our kids.
Previously, when I was writing this (and deleted to start over after this weeks events) I didn’t have a challenge in mind. Now – I do. With all the hatred being spewed – it’s time for love and it is time for us to teach our kids to treat others the same way (with love). So, not only do I want y’all to use this list as a guide of encouraging phrases to tell your child… I want to challenge you to have your child make a list of positive and encouraging phrases they will tell OTHER KIDS daily. I also, want you and your kids to participate in a few “random acts of kindness. Can you do that?
This also makes a GREAT conversation with your kids after school or at the dinner table. Ask them -” Did you encourage anyone today? Tell me about it!” or “what kind thing did you do for someone today”
So, here we go – first: I have compiled a a list of 51 encouraging things your child needs to hear. Want a printable version? Click HERE.
As I mentioned earlier, with the week that I had – I couldn’t just leave it here – I wanted to add on a #KINDNESSCHALLENGE. Will you be participating? It is NOT hard. First – I want you to print out (2 or more copies of) this sheet – one for you and one for each of your kids. Now, ask your kids (and yourself) “What KIND and ENCOURAGING phrases can I make sure I tell OTHERS each day?”Join us in a #KINDNESSCHALLENGE - Gather up the kids and make it a family activity! Okay – now… the final part (for now) to our kindness challenge.
I have compiled a list of 15 Random Acts Of Kindness for Kids (that they can start doing now)
However, I also added a blank page to this… I want to challenge you as a family to come up with MORE ideas. Maybe add on things like “pay for the coffee of the person behind you at Starbucks” or “Put a quarter in an expired meter” etc.
Once you have filled these out – let me know what you come up with! Leave a comment OR post pictures on my FACEBOOK PAGE or on TWITTER! I would LOVE to see all of these! Use the hashtag: #KINDNESSCHALLENGE – get your friends involved too! I am SURE we can make a huge impact and get tons of people participating and spreading KINDNESS!
