My son Dylan is probably the pickiest eater in the world! But, there is ONE place I can take him to, where that magically is not a problem… TRADER JOE’S. Any time I walk into that place, Dylan rushes me to the sampling station and will actually taste whatever is there and most of the time, he loves it and asks me to buy it, somehow only Trader Joe’s has that magical power with picky kids. Yesterday I made my Trader Joe’s rounds without him however, I was in a rush and quickly stopped in to find a product a friend (shout out and huge thanks to Gina) of mine had told me about.. Black Garlic! And with that…. just like anytime you walk into Trader Joe’s, I found another “gem” as well.
Trader Joe’s has a huge following of people wanting healthy food, however minus their awesome healthy & organic items… Trader Joe’s is actually really a place to find unique foods. Whenever a new item comes out you are even thinking about trying, just get it…fast! Chances are if you do not it WILL sell out and you will have to wait on it… or you will end up later finding out it was a seasonal item and you now have to wait until next year to try it. For example, if you do not buy their Gingerbread houses as soon as they arrive in the Winter, you will not get one last-minute! Those are gone in a few days and they are not a re-order item once they are sold out of inventory.
So of course, on my way yesterday to the pharmacy… I knew I had to run in and see what all the fuss was about with the Black Garlic, apparently it was already sold out at another location near me already; I ran in and I found it! As I was leaving, I decided to take a peek at their “new product” shelf and something else caught my eye, Bacon Jam (yes… you read that right). So I grabbed that as well without even thinking twice and had to run to the cashier before getting distracted and grabbing everything else in sight (I can easily go overboard at Trader Joe’s).
As soon as I got home, I was swarmed by Mike, Dylan and Angel all wanting to hurry and try everything! And of course they had to wait, I had to get pics for this blog first! LOL!
Black Garlic (Fermented Japanese Aomori)
O-M-G. I am a Garlic fanatic… I can put it in just about anything. Ever tried Garlic ice cream? I have.. and I loved it. Anyway, this stuff is what drove me to get to Trader Joe’s in the first place yesterday…
According to the cashier, this is a seasonal item so it is not necessarily a “new” item, however you will only see it for a few months each year (this time of year) Once the season is over, you are out of luck.
Black Garlic is a regular white garlic clove that is fermented. It is soft, but easily sliced. You can smell the garlic right away (I love that smell) but, when you taste it… you will notice it is not as strong as regular garlic, it is very mild. Actually, the spiciness of the garlic lessens through the fermentation process and it gives you an almost plum-like sweetness with a hint of (mild) garlic. I spread some on a cracker just to taste it and it was amazing, even on its own! (Even picky Dylan, who always complains about Garlic for some weird reason that I will never understand, ate it and actually loved it!) My recommendation for this item, would be to add it to any “sweet and savory” dishes you are making that ask for garlic. OR to any dish that uses fresh garlic, yet you prefer a milder garlic flavor.
Also, I googled (of course) the benefits of consuming black garlic… unbelievable! Due to the fermentation process, it has TWICE the amounts of antioxidants than fresh white garlic! Japanese studies have found numerous links to tumor reductions and things like the elimination of psoriasis, etc. I definitely suggest anyone interested to read up on the health benefits.
Yup! you read that right! B-A-C-O-N JAM!
Okay, this is one of those classic, off-the-wall, ‘what in the world?’… Trader Joe’s products! It’s almost so crazy you just have to get it. This item was recently released, however I am not sure if they have has this in the past (as a seasonal item) honestly, it does not seem to be a classic seasonal-type item so I will assume this is its debut (however, I could totally be wrong on this).
So what is this like? Well… imagine spreading your favorite sweet jam (strawberry, grape etc) on a slice of toast or a cracker etc. and then topping it off with smokey bacon bits. It is the perfect bacon-y, sweet, savory and smokey spread. According to the label, it is perfect for any sweet/savory BLT, grilled cheese, appetizer dip etc.
I do not have much of a sweet tooth, but I did like this. I spread this on crackers as a family taste test and everyone devoured them! In fact, this morning Dylan asked me to pack him a few “Bacon Jam Cracker Sandwiches” as a school snack! Yes, my picky eater actually wanted more! LOL! And of course, he asked me to pack him a sample for his best friend, Ian!
If you love all things BACON, this one is definitely worth the a try!
